A Winter’s Tale

Choosing a winter coat is worth spending time and effort on. It is often an investment piece and likely to be part of your wardrobe for a few seasons, when chosen well. So what are the characteristics of a coat that you should consider that will make it perfect for you? How do you make your winter coat shopping experience a tale to remember?

As always when choosing clothes, you want to emphasise the parts of your body you like and use concealing tips to hide the bits you are not so keen on. The most problematic areas that are important to consider when choosing a coat, are large hips, boobs and tummy. So if you need to disguise your hips, choose a simple straight cut that ends just below the knee. A slim column will streamline and elongate your silhouette. Another option would be to put the focus on your waist, so a coat with a slight A-line that flares out from the waist would fit the bill. Avoid flaps on any pockets, as this will add bulk to an area you are trying to give the illusion of being slim.

If you have boobs that present an issue, then don’t struggle with a coat that cannot button over large chest. Instead go for a wide open-neck with narrow lapels, to avoid choking the neck chest area. Choose a one-button style or even concealed buttons that button under the bust lines. To disguise a bulging stomach, choose a coat with a high wide waistband.

If however are you on the slim side, then something like a double-breasted trench coat is perfect. These coats come with shoulder flaps, belts buttons, buckles and all sorts of accessories that create volume that slim girls can get away with. If you are petite, then definitely avoid coats that will swamp you, or those that will make you look like a little girl. Go for a grown up single-breasted straight ‘crombie’ style coat to the knee. Add colour to jazz up this formal coat, as you can get away with it!
